Driving For Life:
In Van Driver Training

DriveSense has developed a series of driving education programmes aimed at fleet and business Van drivers. These events are entitled 'Driving for Life ' and address the many issues associated with the increased risks experienced byVan drivers on today's congested roads. This face to face workshop forms part two of our programme and complements the 'Driving for Life' distance e-learning activity undertaken by all attending delegates. Experienced and carefully selected Driving Facilitators deliver both the theory element and the actual 'on road' and 'post drive' events. Both sessions are designed to 'cement in' the knowledge gained from 'Driving for Life' activities
.
Short in-class theory session includes:

  • Driving concentration versus driving ability
  • Vehicle awareness & care
  • Driver attitude & behaviour
  • Speed management & space management
  • Driving knowledge & attitude assessment
  • Appreciating the basic legal framework that affects UK Van drivers
  • Understanding the benefits of green driving

Following the theory session:

  • A practical guide to conducting a pre-driving vehicle check
  • Understanding the importance of conducting pre-driving checks
  • The pre-drive vehicle walk-around
  • Completing the driver cockpit drill and are you fit to drive check

The 'on-road' event:

  • The 10 commandments of driving
  • Concentration on the public highway
  • Braking and slowing accurately
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Expecting the unexpected & dealing with blind spots
  • Driving at speed – motorways
  • Driving out of town – extra urban routes
  • Driving in town – urban driving

The 'post-drive' event:

  • 1-1 driving review feedback from DriveSense facilitator to participating driver(s)
  • End of event driver text based - multiple choice assessment
  • Completion of individual driver improvement action plan

The DriveSense team firmly believe that enrolment onto this program can help to reduce the potential risk of road traffic incidents. Furthermore 'Driving for Life' events can assist drivers consciously in developing defensive driving skills, whilst focusing on all of the essential health and safety issues regarding increasing occupational driving road risk.
